Green IT is an aspiration; all of us want to do the right thing for the environment so why should IT be exempt? The answer is it should not be exempt but what is Green IT and how can you differentiate between marketing and reality? IT is no different from any other industry and if money can be made by matching a message to an aspiration then guess what happens? Try Googling Green IT and see how many of the hits are based on selling something.
And then consider that Googling is in itself not all that Green; every time we Google, we cause power to be used and CO2 to be generated. This presentation wll discuss how marketing of Green can be very different to reality and how trying to be Green can lead to unexpected (and often consequential) rebound effects.

Brian Johnson joined CA Technology Services in 2004.

He once did some vaguely interesting things, sometimes using ITIL, mostly using the combined brainpower of the people he worked with.
Brian has authored, or co-authored, more than 20 titles ITIL, project management and related subjects. His column will almost certainly fail to provide answers to burning questions about ITSM/ITIL - largely because they are only opinions. Well, that is his opinion.
